SCDSB Trustee Deni Among the First Cohort of Trustees to Successfully Complete OCSTA Course

02/11/2016 - In 2015 eight universities in Ontario collaborated with the Ontario Catholic School Trustee Association (OCSTA) to create the OCSTA Certificate Course in Leadership & Good Governance. This is a 12-week online course that is provincial in scope but also includes local Catholic issues specific to a trustee's own regional district. The course provides a trustee with many benefits such as developing a greater understanding and appreciation of the history of Catholic education in Ontario along with a greater understanding of the role of Catholic social teaching in our modern society.  Read more...


St. John Students Howling with the Sudbury Wolves

01/28/2016 - On January 25, 2016, 7 members of the Sudbury Wolves took their "off ice" game to the full day Kindergarten class of Mrs. Yasko, Mrs. Gionet and Mrs. Thomson at St. John Catholic Elementary School in Garson. Encouraged by Coach David Matsos to support and participate in community events, the seven team players played hockey in the gym with students; read hockey inspired stories in small groups; answered many questions from the students and autographed paper jerseys that the children made. In turn, the students proudly gave the players a large hand made "Thank you" sign bearing each of their names on hand drawn mini sticks. Read more...

Bellmore New Chair of the Board at SCDSB

12/02/2015 - On Tuesday, December 1, 2015 Trustee Michael Bellmore was acclaimed as the new Board Chair for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. Born in Sudbury, Bellmore is a proud alumnus of Sudbury Catholic Schools (Immaculate Conception and St. Charles College). He was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2010, however he was elected to the former Sudbury District Roman Catholic Separate School Board in 1994 as one of the youngest ever elected, and served until 1997. Read more...

Cards Do It - Largest Single Donation to the Sudbury Food Bank for a Five Day Drive

10/28/2015 - The goal was to raise 60 thousand cans in five days. The result was astounding. Students and staff, along with the support of its feeder schools and the community raised 125, 452 cans to line the shelves of the food bank heading into the holiday season. The breakdown is twenty thousand dollars in cash collected and 25, 000 cans. Students will spend the day assisting with the transport of the food to the food bank warehouse. Read more...


Cards ‘can’ do it! 

10/21/2015 - Members of the St. Charles College Student Council are selling tees in the main foyer of the school this week to support the Sudbury Food Bank.  The t-shirts which are retailing for twenty dollars go to supporting the school’s annual food drive.   That means the sale of one shirt equates to 100 cans to line the shelves at the food bank. Read more...

Sudbury Catholic Schools - Relays for Life at St. John, St. Anne and St. Paul

05/13/2015 - As part of their school’s Catholic Education activities, St. John, St. Anne and St. Paul Catholic Elementary Schools held an in-school Relay for Life on Friday, May 8, 2015. For St. John, this year marks the school’s seventh year hosting the event. Connecting with Community Partners at St. John

05/11/2015 - During Catholic Education Week, St. John Catholic Elementary School students in Mrs. Vendramin’s grade 1 social studies class enjoyed a visit from Constable Coluzzi. The police officer was asked to answer some questions that the students developed together before having an opportunity to sit in the Greater Sudbury Police’s brand new dodge charger. Update on Negotiations

04/24/2015 - You may have heard in the media that the Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association ((OECTA), representing elementary, secondary and occasional teachers in our Board voted to approve strike action. Central bargaining is continuing between the province, unions and the Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association (OCSTA), which represents Catholic school boards at the provincial table. At present, we are not aware of any planned labour disruptions by OECTA. Read more...

Christmas Arts Spectacular tonight at St. Charles College

St. John Celebrates National Aboriginal Day

06/23/2014 - St. John Catholic Elementary School students gathered on June 20 to celebrate a day in which we are called to learn more about First Nation, Metis and Inuit peoples. Student participated in a Prayer Service and had the opportunity to hear from local First Nation people about what National Aboriginal Day means to them. Author Chad Solomon visits St. John/ St. James School

06/04/2014 - Graphic novelist and creator of Rabbit and Bear Paws, Chad Solomon visited both St. John and St. James Catholic Elementary Schools. The Rabbit and Bear Paws series involves heroes that share humourous adentures based on tradition Aboriginal teachings. The students at both schools had an opportunity to learn some traditional Aboriginal teachings, as well as, the creativity and innovation that is involved with designing graphic novels.  Read more...


St. John Runs for Diabetes

05/12/2014 - On May 11th, 11 dedicated St. John Catholic Elementary School students participated in the Sudbury Rocks 5K run for diabetes. The cross-country running team has been participating in races throughout the school year in order to train for this event. St. John Students Shine at Laurentian X-C Running Challenge

09/27/2013 -  On September 26th, 2013, over 800 students from across Greater Sudbury elementary schools participated in the Laurentian X-C Running Challenge at Laurentian University.  St.John's student, Shane Poitras, brought home the gold in the Senior Elementary Boys Division with a record time of 12:07, placing him 1st among 223 grade 7 & 8 boys.  Shane has proven to be an exceptional athlete and we are overwhelmingly proud of his admirable victory!  As well, Hannah Whyte placed 4th in the Junior Elementary Girls Division and Colin Burrell placed 3rd in the Junior Elementary Boys Division.  Overall, St. John's team ranked 2nd for Junior Girls, 3rd for Junior Boys, and 6th for Senior Boys of over 20 schools!  Read more...


St. John “Fights Back” Against Cancer

05/30/2013 - Despite the rain that poured down on May 10th, the students and staff of St. John Catholic Elementary School remained committed to their walk for their 5th annual relay for life with just one tweak – instead of walking outside, they decided to walk inside the school’s gym. Event organizer and teacher Irene Raymond didn’t miss a beat when the weather decided to be uncooperative and quickly made arrangements for each of the classes to rotate their walks in the school gym. Read more...

St. John’s Hallway to Spiritual Journey

03/18/2013 - As staff and students walk down the halls of St. John Catholic Elementary School, they will be making way into the St. John’s Hallway to Spiritual Journey.   The primary, junior, intermediate hallways have been named after positive Character/Virtue Building traits.  For example, walk down Happy Lane, or Empathy Rd. when visiting the Kindergarten students who are busy in the hallways ready to enter class. Empathy Rd. connects with the Rootsof Empathy program that takes place in the Full Day Kindergarten  classes.  The Roots of Empathy is a bullying prevention program that teaches young children social/emotional competencies. Or, why not saunter down the junior hallway of Peace Blvd.and Faith Avenue.  Then, there is the Gr.8 hallway, where students enter Stewardship Blvd.  As the leaders of the School, the students are responsible stewards in setting an example to carrying out the work God is calling them to do.  Read more...

Creative Recycling at St. John

01/23/2013 - St. John Catholic Elementary School Secretary, Tara Large and Lunchroom Supervisor, Pat Burell show off some crafted recycled bags. Pat Burell likes to recycle, and sewed up Jammer cooler bags & pencil cases. She explains that the process is quite simple from cutting the bags to sewing them up. It teaches children that many everyday items can be recycled into a useful products. St. John Student Poster Contest Winner

10/23/2012 - Students at St. John Catholic Elementary School gathered recently to celebrate with Grade 4 student Zoe Martin. Zoe created a poster last year that won the Legion Remembrance Day poster contest at both the regional and district levels. As well, it received an honourable mention at the provincial level. Cardinals Share Their 'Goodness' with the Sudbury Food Bank

10/22/2012 - The line ‘Teach me goodness’ is an integral part of the St. Charles College motto. This week, the students at the school learned about goodness and shared the fruits of their labour. The secondary school students, coupled with children in the feeder schools canvassed together for the largest school food drive in the city. The goal was to raise 60 000 cans for the Sudbury Food Bank and the Cardinals surpassed that goal with a new all-time total of 125 080 cans. Partners Sign Community Threat Assessment Protocol

04/04/2012 - Representatives of the Greater Sudbury Police Service, area school boards and local agencies signed a Community Threat Assessment Protocol on March 27, 2012, pledging to work together to ensure schools remain safe for students and staff. The Community Threat Assessment Protocol is a collaborative response to student behaviour that may pose a risk to other students, staff and members of the community. 02/13/2012 - In keeping with the spirit of the “World Day of the Sick” (Saturday, February 11th), a celebration was held at St. John Catholic Elementary School on Wednesday, February 8th,at which time students, staff, and invited guests joined together to take part in a prayer service honouring their community. 02/08/2012 - On February 1st, the Sudbury and District Health Unit and St. John Catholic Elementary School came together to offer an informative and tasty evening for families called E.A.T. (Eat Healthy, Anaphylaxis Awareness and Take and Taste). The SDHU began the evening with a presentation on allergies and anaphylaxis awareness. Families then sampled a variety of tasty, nutritious and nut-free lunch items such as egg salad pitas, veggie wraps, snack mix, fennel salad and black bean brownies. St. John Students Celebrate Literacy Day with a Twist

02/06/2012 - Primary students at St. John School celebrated World Literacy Day on Friday, January 27th with a Fairy Tale twist. Students enjoyed dressing as their favourite Fairy Tale character as they spent the morning engaged in literacy activities. St. John’s Third Annual Relay for Life

05/16/2011 - As part of the school’s Catholic Education activities, St. John Elementary School held their third annual relay for life on May 6, 2011. Students, staff and invited guests started off their day in the gymnasium to listen to speakers from local cancer organizations talk about the positive impact the school’s relay has had on the community. As well, survivors connected to the school– be it parents, grandparents, friends etc, were introduced as honoured guests (donning yellow survivor t-shirts) and all were holding balloons with inspirational messages written on them.  Read more...

03/27/2011 - On Thursday, March 24, staff from both the Sudbury Catholic District School Board and the Rainbow District School Board were given the opportunity to attend a workshop with Chris D’Souza on Building Inclusive Schools and Communities. St. Charles Elementary holds 5th annual 'Johnathan Hetu Walk' for cancer

06/23/2009 - St. Charles School in Chelmsford once again had their Johnathan Hetu walk. This is the fifth year of the walk in remembrance of Johnathan Hetu, a student who passed away from cancer. This year the walk was able to raise $3200. This puts our 5 year total at $22 175. Both of Johnathan parents were able to join us in the walk and channel 10 news was also there to do a story, which is now appearing on Channel 10 news.  Read more...

St. John Catholic School Launches Waste Reduction Pilot Project

10/25/2007 - The Sudbury Catholic District School Board is pleased to announce that St. John Catholic School has been selected by the City of Greater Sudbury to participate in a school-based recycling project. Prior to the launch of the pilot project, only paper and cardboard products were being recycled at the school. Toronto Symphony Orchestra Promotional Material to Feature St. John Student

11/29/2005 - SCDSB students were treated to Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s Northern Lights Tour 2005 at Laurentian University’s Fraser Auditorium back in September. 06/27/2005 - The Sudbury Catholic District School Board continues its inquiry into concerns regarding the roof at St. John Catholic School in Garson. The DensDeck Prime installed at St. John’s School was inspected on June 15, 2005 and was found to have been manufactured within specifications and suitable for the specified roof assembly. G-P Gypsum’s, supplier of the Prime coating, has informed the Sudbury Catholic District School Board via correspondence that there is no health risk involved with the finished product. Pope John Paul’s commitment to social justice, the vulnerable, international unity and youth, is a source of inspiration to many people especially the youth in our Catholic school communities.
