St. Charles Catholic School Presents “Wear a Hat Day in Honour of Johnathan”

The students and staff from St. Charles Catholic School,
26 Charlotte Street in Chelmsford will be participating in a “Wear a Hat for Johnathan Day” on Friday, May 4, 2007 at the school.

Last year, St. Charles Catholic School participated in a walk-a-thon to raise money for the Northern Ontario Families with Cancer Organization; this event was spearheaded by David Nicholls a Grade 7 teacher. The school first started the fundraiser as a tribute to Johnathan Hetu, a 13 year old student at the school who passed away with cancer in September of 2004.

Mr. Nicholls along with the school’s staff, the entire student body and the school community would like to remember Johnathan’s legacy again this year by hosting a “Wear a Hat Day” at St. Charles Catholic School and are inviting all of the sister schools of the Sudbury Catholic District School Board to participate. All SCDSB students and staff will wear a hat on May 4, 2007 and will donate one dollar to the Northern Ontario Families with Cancer Organization in Johnathan’s honour.

Johnathan Hetu Walk For Cancer Great Success

Students and staff from St. Charles Catholic School recently participated in the ‘Johnathan Hetu Walk For Cancer’ in and around the school yard. Johnathan was a student at St. Charles Catholic School until he passed away with cancer in 2004. He was 13 years old when he passed away. The annual walk is a fundraiser for the Northern Ontario Family’s of Children with cancer which is the organization that supported Johnathan and his family during his struggle with cancer.

The school raised $5,400.00 for Northern Ontario Families of Children with Cancer. The “Johnathan Hetu Award” was presented at the end of the walk to Alexander Predon, a grade 7 student. This is the second presentation and it will become a annual event. Last year Kerissa Blacklock won the award. The award goes to a student who participates in sports and has a positive attitude.

Johnathan died of cancer in September 2004. He participated in sports even though he was undergoing treatment, in part because he was afraid of being forgotten and alone. Johnathan was remembered yesterday, and St. Charles School hopes to continue to remember him each year through this award as they help other children and families who are living with cancer.

Catholic School Council Chairperson Addresses St. John Students

During Catholic Education Week, Ms. Daniel, the Catholic School Council Chairperson, addressed the Gr. 7 & 8 students at St. John about the importance of Catholic Education and why she has chosen to send her sons to a Catholic School.

She emphasised the role of a faith community in education and how it helps students to build character and prepare for the challenges of life. She touched on the partnership between Parish, Home and School and how each partner complements the other to develop a complete education for children.

Students were inspired by her volunteer work at the school as a way of giving back to the community what she and her children gain from the community. We thank Ms. Daniel, and all members of Catholic School Councils for their commitment and contribution.
