St. John Students Get Hooked On Voting

Grade 4-6 students at St. John School in Garson recently participated in a “Student Vote” program sponsored by Elections Canada which gave them the opportunity to experience the democratic process firsthand as well as practice the habits of informed and engaged citizenship. April 28th, 2011 was our designated “Student Vote” day and students took on the roles of Deputy Returning Officers, Poll Clerks and voters parallelling the adult electoral process. The exercise of a mock election proved to be a very empowering process and students are eagerly awaiting the election results both at the school and federal level.

ST. JOHN SCHOOL 5/6 COED BASKETBALL TEAM BOARD AND CITY CHAMPS!

Congratulations goes out to the St. John School 5/6 Co-Ed Basketball Team who powered their way through the St. Raphael Royals 3rd annual 3 vs 3 Tournament and the Greater Sudbury Board of Basketball Officials Wrap Up Tournament with a combined total of 11 wins and 0 loses to take first place in both tournaments! The St. John School community along with Coaches Ms. Hluchaniuk and Mr. Whalen wish to thank and commend the efforts of team players: (front row l-r) Shane Poitras, Logan Daniel, (second row l-r) Sara Gardner, Allison McLean, Hope Joly, Nick Chokan, Brandon Labre and Tommy Vlahos.

St. John Catholic Elementary School Shows They “Can” Do It!

The students of St. John school are extremely proud to announce that they collected over 22,000 cans for the Garson Food Bank during its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. This year, the students set their sights on trying to meet last year’s total (16,000) and ended up surpassing it by an overwhelming 6,000 cans. All students and staff of St. John school should be very proud of their good deed in support of the Garson Food Bank.

St. John Hosts Floor Hockey Tournament

On Saturday May 29th, 2010, St. John School hosted a grade 5/6 co-ed Floor Hockey tournament at St. Charles College. The tournament was very well attended and all participants had a great time. Congratulations go out to the following teams who won – St. Christopher school won first place, St. James school won second place, and St. John school won third place. Thank you to all who attended.

St. John Catholic Elementary School Salute to the Olympics

Despite the frigid temperatures, the students at St. John Catholic Elementary had smiles from ear to ear as they took part in the school’s Olympic Day on Thursday, February 25, 2010. The school had many different events planned for the students including a wagon ride pulled by two horses from Wagon Wheel Ranch and the ever popular potato and spoon races. The smell of maple syrup filled the hallways as the staff and volunteers provided pancakes and hot chocolate for the students to keep them warm and fuelled their energy to keep the spirit level high throughout the day.

St. John Catholic Elementary School Supports St. John the Evangelist Parish

Father Mathieu, Parish Priest of St. John the Evangelist in Garson accepted a cheque from Toni Kritz-Roque, the grade 2 teacher from St. John Catholic Elementary School last week. The school raised the money through gift donations from staff and students that were used to make baskets and then raffled off. As well, local business donated gift certificates for the school’s gift tree. Tickets were sold and a total of $1500 was raised to support the parish. The parish is using the money to purchase malaria nets for children in third world countries. Each net costs ten dollars and can potentially protect a small family or groups of children from malaria.

St. Charles Elementary holds 5th annual ‘Johnathan Hetu Walk’ for cancer

St. Charles School in Chelmsford once again had their Johnathan Hetu walk. This is the fifth year of the walk in remembrance of Johnathan Hetu, a student who passed away from cancer. This year the walk was able to raise $3200. This puts our 5 year total at $22 175. Both of Johnathan parents were able to join us in the walk and channel 10 news was also there to do a story, which is now appearing on Channel 10 news.

Relay for Life to be hosted by St. John Catholic School

On Friday, June 12, 2009 from 9:15-11:45, over 400 students, teachers and parents from the St. John Catholic School community will rally together to help raise funds by holding a Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life at our school.

The Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life involves participants who take turns walking, running or strolling around a track. Proceeds are used to fund cancer research and community services for people living with cancer and their families.
